Interview Questions

I had an actual job interview today in downtown Minneapolis. It was my first real on-site job interview, made more exciting by the fact that it was in the big city on the upper floors of a pretty tall skyscraper. One of the questions they asked me was "What are your strengths and weaknesses?" I was expecting the question, but I admit I wasn't sure how to answer. If you know me, what do you think my strengths and weaknesses are? How should one answer this question?

If you don't know, how should we? Maybe your mom and sister or someone else who comments on here could help you more than me.

So, what did you tell the interviewer?

Was this in regard to you design skills or just you personally? From what I know, I think one of your strengths would be your understanding of the design process. You brainstorm and allow preliminary ideas to grow and develop into a finished product. Also, due to the amount of experience, you have a strength with logo and identity design. You know how to simplify and say a lot with a little. You are also in tune with what is "in" and trendy without limiting the life-cycle of a logo or design.
Weaknesses? That's harder to spell out. Maybe you spend too much time with preliminaries and find it difficult to spit out a design and make it "fly" the first time. (I could be wrong, I haven't observed your work habits lately.) Why am I apologizing, you asked for this. Humm... What else? Ah, this one applies to me too. You may take criticism well on the outside, but inside you are screaming 'You idiot! I'm the designer, you're the client. Let me do my job and you do yours!' And when you think no one can hear you, you vent like a — like a, ah... like a... I don't know, but you know what i mean. That is one of my weaknesses anyway and I've felt a common bond with you in that area. Maybe it's just me.

Strengths and weaknesses... Yes, a hard question to answer. Are you willing to learn? Work well with others, team player? Are you honest? Able to work overtime? How are your organizational skills? Are you able to make decisions or are you indecisive like your mother? Loyal? Can you draw? What programs do you know the best? Are you lacking knowledge of any programs? Are you dependable? Detail oriented? I know I haven't really answered any of your questions, I didn't really intend to, but hopefully I gave you something to think about.

Let us know how things go. We miss you and wish you were here.
